“I never thought I would be able ride up the Parliament House hill again in my life….this is sheer freedom on two wheels”
The Cycle Works electric bike demo day proved one thing: Canberrans are beginning to realise how electric bikes can change your life.
For people who are recovering from illness or injury, they can make the difference between being able to join their family and friends on a bike ride, or miss out. For others, what might be the occasional ride to work becomes a regular ride to work, because that hill on the way home is now no barrier.
E-bikes can provide an achievable way back to regular exercise. You can start off with fun gentle exercise at higher power assist, then power the motor down over time to increase your fitness level.
Over forty people booked in for the five free half-hour circuit electric bikes provided by new local tour company Canberra Urban Adventures on the demonstration day.
Many also came to try some of the European mid drive electric bikes offered by Pushys at their stall on the day.
Lots of questions were answered about the range, abilities and maintenance of the bikes.
After the initial surprise of feeling the pedal assist motor kicking in (starting off at low power) it took most riders about 5 minutes to feel comfortable, crank up the power for the hills, and fall in love with the bikes.
The best way to get to know how the bikes work is to try them out with an experienced rider. Graham at Canberra Urban Adventures offers a variety of ways to do this – from regular guided trips to special charters for family or corporate groups.
You can reach Graham on 0421 140 401 or via email at firstname.lastname@example.org to work out the best option for you.
Electric bikes may never replace pedal bikes for the regular rider, but for commuting to work, or trips to the local shops, and for people who struggle to keep up with others on an ordinary bike, they may well be one way to change the way you live and feel a whole lot better.
